Diazepam: More information

Top Recommended Pharmacy's

Diazepam is a member of the benzodiazepine family of sedadives and depressants. Diazepam causes a dose-related depression of the central nervous system just like other sedatives. Diazepam is frequently prescribed to treat anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and muscle spasms.

Diazepam is the generic version of the drug Valium.

While frequently prescribed in the near past, the use of diazepam has recently been eclipsed by stronger, faster-acting sedatives like Xanax (alprazolam).

Pharmacology of diazepam

Diazepam works on the central nervous system, relieving nervous tension and anxiety and relaxing muscles. Diazepam acts by enhancing the inhibitory actions of the neurotransmitter GABA, thus preventing GABA from transmitting synaptic messages.

Diazepam is rapidly absorbed by the lining of the stomach. Peak levels of diazepam in the blood stream generally occur within 1-2 hours. Acute half life is approximately 6-8 hours.

Side effects of diazepam

The most frequent side effects of diazepam are drowsiness, fatigue, and ataxia (loss of balance) -- perfectly in line with its use as a sedative. For these reasons, those who use diazepam should never drive or operate heavy machinery.

Rarely, diazepam causes a paradoxical reaction with excitability, muscle spasm, lack of sleep, and rage or aggression. Confusion, depression, slurred speech or speech problems and double vision are also rare side effects of diazepam.

Diazepam as "mother's little helper"

Diazepam and its big brother Valium were originally prescribed as anti-anxiety pills. They give people a feeling that everything's okay, regardless of the situation. That is why diazepam makes such an excellent anti-anxiety medication.

The problem with this is situational. For instance, a person who has taken diazepam might not act appropriately to a potentially dangerous situation. Daily situations, such as a pot overboiling on the stove, are potentially dangerous and require more than an "oh, it's okay" reaction to deal with them.

Those who become addicted to diazepam tend to become unable to cope with such daily issues. Lower and lower levels of stress are needed to cause the addict to seek the pleasant feelings of another dose of diazepam. For this reason, diazepam should not be used over long periods.

Where can I get diazepam?

Diazepam must be prescribed by a doctor. If you think you have a disorder or a complaint that requires diazepam or a similar drug for treatment, talk to your doctor.
